Mastering mindful eating -- awareness of eating -- and stress-reduction techniques help prevent weight gain even without dieting, U.S. researchers say.
Jennifer Daubenmier and the Elissa Epel University of California, San Francisco, said the women involved in their study were not on calorie-counting diets.
Instead, 24 of the 47 chronically stressed, overweight and obese women were randomly assigned to mindfulness training and practice. The other 23 served as a control group. No diets were prescribed, but all participants attended one session about the basics of healthy eating and exercise.

A Little Thyroid Goes a Long Way
When we’re younger, we worry about packing on the freshman 15 — but now we need to focus on avoiding the 40-something (and plus!) 15. Once you start nearing the big 4-0, your body may stop producing key hormones at the optimal levels, resulting in a sluggish metabolism that doesn’t burn calories the way it used to.

How a Shift in Your Vocabulary Can Instantly Change Your Attitude | Michael Hyatt
A friend called and asked me where I was going. I said, “Oh, I’m headed to San Jose. I have to speak at a convention.” I said it with a little resignation in my voice.
When I hung up, it hit me. I don’t have to speak. I get to speak. That instantly changed my attitude.
How many people would gladly do this for free—or even pay for the opportunity? Yet I was getting paid to do it.
The first expression (i.e., I have to do it) is the language of duty. Nothing wrong with that. I am all for responsibility. But too often, we say it with a sigh, like it’s a sentence—or we are a victim.
The second expression (i.e., I get to do it) is the language of privilege. It is as if we have been given a gift, and we are relishing the opportunity.

The Difference Between Trying and Doing | Michael Hyatt
Recently, I watched Tony Robbins [Warning: rough language] give similar advice to a woman who was struggling in her marriage. She stood up in one of his seminars to ask a question. She complained that she had “tried everything” to improve her relationship with her husband but nothing had changed.

Slow Cooker. Whole Chicken. Three Meals in One.
I absolutely love my crockpot. I also like to cook once and eat (at least) twice… that’s exactly what I did yesterday with my crockpot.
The plan for last night was crockpot roasted chicken, later in the week we’re having pulled BBQ chicken sandwiches, so to make it easier and cheaper we’re doing it all at once.

Top 5 Diabetes Super Foods
Even though we live in a pill-popping, drug-oriented culture, more and more people are starting to realize that food is really our best medicine. In 90% of all chronic and degenerative diseases, poor diet is either the direct cause or a significant factor. This is especially true for Type 2 diabetes. There is no stage of Type 2 that can’t be helped by making some smart dietary changes. And the earlier they are made, the more dramatic the health improvements will be.

Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: Allow yourself to fully blossom: Remove a few protective petals
For as long as I can remember, my stepfather and mother have sent me flowers on my birthday and other special occasions. The gorgeous flowers come carefully packaged in a box delivered to my door. When there are roses, there's a note inside that says, "Remove the outer 2-3 petals which were left on to protect the rose during shipping."
As I was arranging the beautiful bouquet I received this year, it was obvious that some of the outer petals were bruised or torn. However, others looked perfectly fine so it was tempting not to pull the petals off. It seems counter-intuitive to "fix" something that isn't obviously "broken."

How “Blog Monetization” Is Just Completely Wrong | David Risley dot com
A guy wants to open up a store. He is tired of his regular job and wants to do something different.
He reads a lot about stores. And then jumps right into setting up a store. He puts the shelves in there. He buys one of those big glowing “OPEN” signs. He makes everything all pretty. He looks forward to those hoardes of people who will, of course, come by to check out his pretty store.

So many things that would have been money losers then can be profitable today.
When you run your own concert, selling tickets online and renting the theatre out yourself, you might be able to keep 85 cents of every dollar your audience spends on a ticket. In the system we grew up with, by the time the box office, Ticketmaster, the stagehands, the promoters and everyone else takes a cut, you might end up with literally nothing.

How To Find Safe Drinking Water For Your Family
A recent study in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine got me thinking about perceptions—and misconceptions—when it comes to water.According to the study, black and Latino parents are three times more likely than whites to give their children bottled water rather than tap; these buyers also spend 1% of their income on bottled water, versus white buyer’s 0.4%.
This, in light of an Environmental Working Group report, which found only three of the nation’s 170 brands of bottled water sold in the United States disclosed where the water came from, how it was purified and what contaminants remained in the water. An earlier study by The Natural Resources Defense Council found that 17% of bottled waters contained unsafe bacteria, and 22% were contaminated with chemicals—including arsenic.
5 Ways to Promote Your Product Without Pissing Off Your Audience | David Risley dot com
You might have a product and you might have even sold a few copies during the launch. But how to keep squeezing money out of it is something that can make you really crazy.
Promoting your product can make you feel like a door-to-door salesman trying to sell ice cubes to eskimos. Many of us are often left scratching our heads as to why we’re not generating more revenue from our products. David even talked about why we need to let go of our hesitancy to pitch, yet we still struggle with this.

The 5 Rules of Six-Figure Blogging | David Risley dot com
A lot of bloggers out there want to make money doing it, but the way it is being approached just isn’t going to work.
I’ve said it about 2 billion times by now (I’ve lost count), but a blog is not a business. It never will be.
Yet, I see a lot of bloggers that, when they sit down and work, all they focus on is writing that next blog post. Really? How’s THAT going to make a business for you?
Taking the Blame | Martha Beck
It’s a scene we’ve watched a hundred times: A public figure glares into the camera with an expression of outraged innocence and declares, “I am not a crook!” or “It was dehydration, not a drug overdose!” or “I have never had an affair!” Most of us in the viewing audience used to give these folks the benefit of the doubt, but not anymore. We’ve grown jaded watching a succession of well-known people make bold disclaimers that later proved to be flat-out falsehoods.

Hurricane Irene Closes In on North Carolina Coast - WSJ.com
By VALERIE BAUERLEIN in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., MICHAEL HOWARD SAUL in New York and ARIAN CAMPO-FLORES in Miami
Hurricane Irene weakened slightly Friday morning to a Category 2 storm, but was expected to strengthen again later in the day as it barrels toward the Outer Banks of North Carolina and then on to New York and New England.
Irene is still expected to slam into the North Carolina coast Saturday—roughly somewhere between Morehead City and Cape Hatteras—as a major hurricane, which is a storm of Category 3 or more.
Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda Resigns From Slashdot - Slashdot
It was the summer of '97 and I was a college kid working part time as a programmer at an ad agency. I wrote a simple CMS: practically my first perl program (I was so happy to not have to write in anything Microsoft!). I got an old DEC Alpha Multia in exchange for some freelance Java work. I stuffed it under my desk at work and registered the domain name in October. Jeff "Hemos" Bates chipped in on the registration fee. Within months we were serving thousands of people per day on a system that looked remarkably similar to the Slashdot you see today. It was simple: I just was sharing stories that I stumbled on with a small group of friends.

Monday Tip – Stickibility – Now Is Not The Time To Give Up

As parents, we’re supposed to teach our children healthy habits. As a doctor, I was supposed to model healthy habits for my patients too. But the truth is, my habits weren’t particularly healthy.
By the time my children could both walk and talk, I had been yoyo dieting for nearly 25 years. It may not have been obvious on the outside, but my head was filled with food rules acquired from years of intermittent restriction to make up for years of mindless and emotional eating. I could estimate the calories and points of just about any food; I knew how long I had to spend on the treadmill for eating a “bad” food; and I had worn out the pages of my Weight Watchers Cookbook. I regularly experienced the elation, deprivation, and guilt of my perpetual eat-repent-repeat cycle.

Believe: How to Orgasm – Part IV | Owning Pink
There is so much to explore in the female orgasm! Let’s keep going after exploring the head games (Part II) and masturbation (Part III). Actually, “believing” is kinda back to head games, but with a twist. Trust your body to know how to orgasm. Know that your own special brand of orgasm is yours and yours alone, and if you’ve found it, own it. If you haven’t, keep looking and believe you’ll find it. And you will!

Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: Embrace Emotional Eating: Reading the Clues to Your Feelings and Needs
Soon after birth we develop powerful emotional connections to feeding, eating, and food. We eat to socialize, nurture, express love, have fun, soothe a hurt, and reward ourselves for a job well done. In our food abundant environment, eating is a readily accessible way to add pleasure to our lives.
Emotional eating only becomes a problem when it’s over-used to cope with or avoid feelings. (Jeannette remembers the moment she began to turn to food to deal with her emotions; read her story about discovering the missing puzzle piece.)

Ready to Kick Your Inner Critic to the Curb? Make Friends Instead! | Owning Pink
Make Friends with Your Inner Critic?!
EFT is a needle-free form of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body’s subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. When I say “needle-free” I mean that anyone can do EFT anywhere. You just need a basic knowledge of acupuncture pressure points, a few spare fingers, and a quiet place.
There are EFT practitioners who can lead you through the method, but you can learn the simple process of tapping on your own, too. (In fact, you can learn the basic method for free at http://www.thetappingsolution.com/how-to-tap.php)

How To Find The Way To Happiness – With 1 Simple Skill | FinerMinds
If you want to find the way to happiness, there’s 1 simple skill that should always be a part of your personal growth ‘tool box’. No, it’s not a way to make a bunch of money or get great sex. Nor is it a mansion, a yacht, a gorgeous bod, cooperative spouse or well-behaved kids.

Get Your Liver in Shape to Stay Sexy Forever
Our world is teeming with hidden chemicals and poisons, but when it comes to fighting off your body’s toxic burden, you’ve got a champ — specifically, your liver. Let me put it this way: Your liver is the like the “most valuable player” when it comes to keeping you healthy and slim. It controls the levels of various chemicals in your body, cleans poisons and toxins out of your system, and helps regulate the amount of fats in your body by producing bile, which digests the fats you eat. In a nutshell, it’s responsible for a lot.

Stop the Pop: Kicking Your Soda Habit
Americans drink over 50 gallons of soda per person each year — and most of those soft drinks are full of corn syrup and sugar — and calories. All that liquid sugar serves to spike our insulin levels and encourage our bodies to store energy as fat, which makes us fat in the process. Think you’re off the hook because you drink diet sodas? Think again.Diet versions aren’t any better — they may be worse because they’re loaded with chemicals that can wreak havoc on your health and your weight. When you drink diet sodas, the brain finds nothing recognizable as nutrition to make healthy cells. And the brain wants to get fed, so it triggers cravings for more food. Suddenly, you’re faced with impossible–to–ignore cravings for fattening foods (hello, french fries!).

Manifesting Your Own Dreams & Desires | Good Vibe Blog
Watching Sadie pretend to enjoy the bone she doesn’t really want made me wonder if I do the same thing. Am I chewing on bones that aren’t mine?
Have I wanted something only because everyone else does? Or because having it reinforces my “status”?
I know I’ve fallen for this before, when it came to college degree, marriage, corporate career, expensive car, and probably even with ideal body intentions, too.
Clients consistently want help with career success, bigger bank accounts, better relationships, etc. But I suspect part of the reason some of us aren’t so good at manifesting that stuff is because it isn’t what we really want.
As spring unfolds, I started thinking about manifesting a beautiful yard this year – thick, full green lawn bordered by thriving flowers and bushes. But is that what I really want? Or is that someone else’s bone?
It made me wonder more … what if my people didn’t care about long term relationships or financial security or even service to others?

Natural Remedies For Menopausal Symptoms | Owning Pink
The average age of menopause in this country is 51, but it’s important to understand that perimenopause may start much sooner and may last anywhere from 5-15 years. While menopause is technically defined as the absence of a period for a year, perimenopausal symptoms may start long before that. And it’s not just hot flashes women suffer through. Many also experience heavy bleeding, headaches, weight gain, hair loss, and decreased libido. What some doctors may gloss over, though, are some of the cognitive factors. For example, you may feel perpetually forgetful, depressed or altogether NUTS! (The unscientific phrase we in the medical community use is “brain fog.”)

How to Change Your Mindset – and Make Lasting Positive Change In Your Life
Your mindset is a powerful thing. It has the ability to control you, persuade you and even hold you back from doing or achieving things in your life.
It can even make you feel unhappy, when circumstances seem to prove that you should be happy. Which can be confusing. — (I’m speaking from personal experience, of course.)
In my series on happiness, or finding your life balance as an entrepreneur, I mentioned mindset. We talked about how changing your mindset can have a huge positive impact on how things go in your life, and in your online business.
But it’s really not that simple at all…

Which Food Additives Make Children Behave Badly
Research has shown that the food additives used in hundreds of children's foods and drinks can cause temper tantrums and disruptive behavior. A Government-funded study confirms what many parents have long suspected about the effect of chemicals put into sweets, biscuits and foods. Colorings in products such as Smarties, Jelly Tots and fizzy drinks could spark behavior changes in up to a quarter of toddlers.

Feng Shui For the Nursery
You may have likely read about feng shui, an ancient Chinese technique used just for design and positioning furnishings within the space. It has been put to use by companies and private residents in order to generate good energy levels for one’s own surroundings. Regardless if you have in no way put to use feng shui within your own personal living space, why don’t you think about using Feng Shui for the Nursery? Feng shui is currently being used in many baby nurseries across the country for a greater purpose, as well.

Body After Baby? Bullshit! | Owning Pink
But every time I see a “Body After Baby” article showing off how some celebrity is prancing around in a bikini six weeks postpartum, I want to puke.
I’m an OB/GYN physician and a mother, so I speak from experience when I say, “Bullshit.” Real women don’t have personal trainers, raw foods chefs, full-time nannies, and plastic surgeons at their beck and call. Body after baby, my ass.
Let me tell you the truth about the bodies I would see in an OB/GYN office. Shapes change. Waistlines disappear. Formerly plump breasts sag like empty Ziploc bags. Stretch marks mar porcelain skin. Muffin tops bulge over those damn low-waisted jeans that don’t flatter any figure. Vaginas gape. Stuff falls out.

Pack Your Diet With Powerful Proteins
if you have the knowledge and know how to carefully balance your diet with alternate sources of protein. While fruits and veggies get a lot of good press for being nutrient dense, some protein-rich foods can be just as nutritionally potent as produce, such as these superfoods:
- Salmon. This excellent cold-water fish is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which can help keep your hormone levels stable and protect your health. The monounsaturated fats it contains can also help lower your cholesterol and your risk of heart disease.

Detox Your Diet: Get Real, Organic Food
Avoid high–pesticide foods. If you can’t afford to buy everything organic, strategize by buying organic versions of the “dirty dozen,” the fruits and vegetables that when grown conventionally are loaded with pesticides and chemicals. These include grapes, peaches, lettuce, strawberries, apples, pears, bell peppers, kale, carrots, celery, and nectarines.

Untying Knots to Get What You Want | Good Vibe Blog
Anyone who’s ever struggled with a string of tangled Christmas lights or a mess of chains in the jewelry box knows from experience that we don’t untie knots by pulling on loose ends.
(Not saying we’ve never done that, but we know how ineffective it is!)
It’s the same with creating what we want in life.
We don’t get where we want to be by producing more tension.
The same way tugging and pulling on the ends doesn’t untie a knot, neither does:
- Working harder to get clients for your business when you’re nervous about not getting clients. Operating from fear or desperation just makes it worse.
- Arguing with a sweetheart when you want a better relationship. We want things to improve, but raised voices and angry gestures don’t usually facilitate that.
- Beating up your body to get a body you love. Unreasonably restrictive diets and exhaustive workout sessions just adds tension (i.e. “resistance”).

Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: M&M Tasting on Dr. Oz: Can mindful eating help habituation?
We're bombarded with information from both the environment and our internal state. Habituation allows us to tune out unimportant stimuli when the novelty wears off so we're not constantly overwhelmed. For example, you may notice the sound of a fan when you initially walk into a room, but soon it becomes nonexistent.
In the study, people who visualized themselves eating 30 M&Ms® or 30 cubes of cheese ate less of that food. We know that mind-body connection is very powerful; this study suggests that visualization facilitates the process of habituation to food.

Green Tea: The Secret Weight-Loss Weapon
Green tea has received a lot of good buzz in the press over the past few years, as studies show that the antioxidant-rich drink could have beneficial effects on everything from heart health to cancer prevention. And green tea can play a key role in the success of your Sexy Forever Plan. It can boost your metabolic rate by 4 percent for 24 hours after you ingest it; plus, it elevates your adrenaline for an extended period of time, giving you more energy for your daily activities (including exercise) and helping your body unlock and use stored body fat. (And, a bonus: It may even prevent your body from absorbing additional fat from your food!) Here’s how to work green tea into your daily plan.

A Shoppers Guide To Pesticides
The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides is a key resource for consumers looking for healthier low toxin diets. Since many shoppers can't always find or afford organic produce, they can use the Shopper's Guide to avoid those conventional fruits and vegetables found to be highest in pesticides – the Dirty Dozen – and, instead, choose items from the Clean Fifteen list. The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure.

The Narrow Place: Expanding Through Transitions | Owning Pink
When you’re in transition, you may feel very, very uncomfortable. Whether you’ve lost or left a job, become a new mother, buried a loved one, divorced a spouse, found yourself with an empty nest, or been diagnosed with an illness, you’re likely to find yourself feeling constricted, at least at first.
You gut feels tight. Your heart hurts. You curl into a ball. You shrink. It’s like a mini-death.
You mourn the loss of your former self, letting go of your identity as Mrs. Such-and-Such, or the mother of [insert your child’s name], or the expert in [insert your job title here], or the healthy being you were before your illness. You must say goodbye to a part of yourself that will never be the same again. You are irrevocably changed -- whether you like it or not.
And even if that change is a positive one, it’s likely to hurt.

Clean Up Your Kitchen
Most people consider the kitchen the heart of the home, the place where you nourish your family, but many of the products we rely on can actually do us more harm than good. Some of the everyday items that come into contact with what we eat and drink are laden with chemicals that leach into our food and poison our bodies. Here are some of the worst offenders:

Choosing Cleaner Products to Clean our Bodies
Our skin is the body’s largest organ, and if we are exposing it to chemicals, the skin soaks them up transdermally. Once we get our food intake under control and from a more natural and organic place, it’s time to think about what we are rubbing on our bodies.
Some of the worst offenders are the chemical emulsifiers used in cosmetics, called PEGs (the full name is polyethylene glycol, which is seldom written out). Anything that lists a PEG has been ethoxylated and may be toxic. Look for the group of letters “eth” (from ethoxylated), as well as “mea,” “dea,” and “tea,” in ingredients to identify PEGs.

Sweet Potatoes - A Perfect Superfood?
Sweet potatoes contain significant amounts of antioxidants, including glutathione, which acts as an antiaging wizard in your body by fighting off free radicals (thank you, glutathione!). Also loaded with vitamins and minerals — such as beta-carotene, vitamins A, B, and C, manganese, copper, and iron — sweet potatoes are an excellent source of fiber, which helps to improve your digestion. And they taste great, too!
I love these spuds!

I Finally Found the Magic Pill… EFT
A few years ago things were a mess. My relationship was in a ditch, my relationship with my daughter was a mess, work wasn’t great. I was ready to throw in the towel.
It was right around that time that Bob Doyle hosted his first Boundless Living 45 day challenge. It was a challenge to take action, and accomplish a goal within that time frame. One of the tools he employed and taught about was EFT. I’d never heard of EFT and thought it was kind of whackadoo voodoo magic.
![]()
However, through that community I met Lynne Morrell. She happened to be an EFT coach, and offered me a complimentary session to see what it was all about. At the time I was having a really hard time weaning my toddler (who was older than 2 at the time) and we ended up doing our session on that. The next day my daughter didn’t nurse at all. I was convinced.
I love EFT and find it much easier to follow along with someone as well.

Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: Families: Eat Mindfully - try Kids Cook Monday!
Mindful eating is paying attention to the full experience of eating. I believe that mindful eating begins long before the first bite of food hits your mouth. It starts with the selection and preparation of food, continues through a multisensory eating experience, and ends with a comfortable level of fullness and contentment.
Unfortunately, children, the most mindful eaters in early life, gradually unlearn this natural skill. As toddlers, they touch, smell, and taste every morsel. When they are full they stop eating the food (and throw it instead). As they get older, they are socialized to see eating as a task to be hurriedly finished on the way to practice, or mindlessly accomplished while watching T.V. And cooking? Many kids don't have any idea where their food even comes from much less how to prepare it.
Great Article about kids

Women Modeling in Their 40's
Carol Alt: There's work, but what's really missing is magazines. Except for More magazine, I can't think of any publication that regularly features or celebrates women in their 40s. Do you think a magazine like Vogue or American Harper's Bazaar (Alt did her first cover for that mag at 20) realizes most of the women who flip through its pages are women in their 40s, not the 18-year-olds they put on the cover. I find that strange. It's not relatable. I'm looking forward to the day when Vogue decides its covers should be of women in their 40s.

Learn to Banish Those Sneaky Sugar Cravings
Sugar cravings are often the sly culprit behind weight gain: The more sugar you eat, the more you want to eat. It’s not just white sugar that you have to look out for, it’s all the high-insulin foods (and caffeine as well) that can keep your insulin on a roller coaster, spiking and dipping, causing energy highs and lows — and at that low you crave... Guess what? More sugar!
The good news is, once you take sugar out of your diet, you will lose those cravings. Your body will instead begin to crave food that provides rich nutrients to keep you feeling healthier and energetic. The question is, how do you get there? How do you get past that fiendish bell curve of the sugar-craving demon? Here are some of my best suggestions to help you diminish cravings and stabilize your blood sugar.

Cleaning Your Air and Water
Unfortunately, there’s no feasible way to completely cut toxins out of your life, but you can significantly cut down your exposure by taking a few simple measures. And it’s worth it! After all, up to this point, you’ve come into contact with toxins everywhere, all the time, every day! Though we’ve already talked about the hazards of toxins in industrial foods and cleaners, there’s more to it than that: The air you breathe is often tainted with car exhaust, paint fumes, and chemicals (like aerosol room fresheners) while your tap water is often “supplemented” with fluoride (which many scientists believe can be poisonous when ingested), among other chemicals that build up in our systems over time.
Even these solutions aren't the best. avid Wolfe suggests spring water. Well many people don't live near a spring and to find it bottled in glass, which is suppose to be the 2nd best is challenging.
Essential Guide To Facebook Page Changes [SCREENSHOTS] | MariSmith.com
Facebook unveiled major upgrades to fan Pages on February 10. If you have not yet upgraded your Page(s), you can do so here. I recommended choosing the Preview option first to get a feel for what’s changed. However, on March 10, the upgrade will be automatic, so you may as well switch before then to get used to it.
ALL Page Admins who have upgraded their Page already (or are currently using Facebook in Page Preview mode), will view *your* Page in the upgraded design whether you’ve upgraded yet or not. Basically, it’s the same as the new Profile design rollout – anyone who upgraded sees everyone else the new way.

Relief For Headaches: The Acupuncture Defense
Acupuncture originated in Chinese traditional medicine. This ancient medical therapy was meant to correct imbalances in the flow energy. According to Chinese tradition, disruption of such flow of energy would result to pain and diseases. Acupuncture is believed to restore such balance to the body. Acupuncture for headaches is now a desirable option for those whose headaches become a hindrance to work and everyday life. It has been popular as an additional treatment for patients who have adverse reactions to prescribed or over-the-counter medications.

How to Save Money on Organic Food
Q: I can’t afford to go organic. Do you have any suggestions for making organic food more wallet-friendly?
A: Although the price of organic food has dropped over the past few years, it can still, unfortunately, be a pricey part of a lifelong commitment to health. If you are able to stick with that commitment, however, it’ll be well worth the trouble with the extra years you’ll add on to your life. After all, the cost of illness down the road will far outweigh the price of eating organic food now. There are some ways to take a little bit of pressure off your wallet, though, when committing to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips that I recommend:
